I remember Willie, from when I was a teen, we would go crusing until we found Willie, and then we would stop an talk to him, at first it was a bit scary for me, but then Willie, just became an icon for downtown Peoria. He is Unique, I give you that, but we found him to be harmless and quite interesting in conversation. He reminds me of the interesting people of downtown New York, or San Fran. Each City has it's "special people" Willie, is ours.

Why not send a complementary calendar to the White House? I imagine that in a few years, there will be more Willie's on the streets of America; returning vets from Iraq whose minds have been blown from their horrifying experience. As an artist who sometimes does art of a social nature, this inspires me to create a wild color drawing of Willy; I promise not to plagerize your photos, but will do it from memory and imagination. Willie, would you do us all a favor and not be hurtful and a jerk sometimes? You were probably drinking, I know. I find this to be offensive, even though he may be inagreeance with it. It show's again that the US Government doesn't really care about our Veteran's. As another another Veteran I don't like the fact that you are simple exploiting this man.It's clearly stated that he purposes do things to have a roof over his head. I have none Willie to be around since I was a small kid. When I was a kid and I had come in contact with him I was really scared. I had a chance when I became an adult, to have a conversation with him. I then said to myself that Willie is indeed a nice man whom I could hold a conversation with and not be affraid. The rich people could get drunk, the poor people could get fed, and the homeless people could be provided with survival gear donated from Gander Mountain. Regardless of his alcoholism, Willie demonstrates that one can be an unrepentant drunk, disgusting at times, and a criminal nuisance, but that the most important thing is still how those of us who are not that way react to him. And Peorian's have shown a very kind, compassionate discipline toward Willie when he gets out of hand, and surprisingly for Peoria, bent over backwards to protect his constitutional rights. In that sense, Willie as a crazy, annoying, alcoholic black man, is the catalyst of for a special look into the kind heart s of Peorians. And yes, the man who has spent more nights on the streets than any other Peorian, certainly should get a street after his name...before he is dead, and a statute, by none other than Preston Jackson.

As a little girl I would see Willie when I went downtown with my parents; My parents always would speak to him and give him a little money. I on the other hand was SCARED of him. Until five years ago when I went downtown and saw him again after hearing that he was dead. I am so thankful that I spoke to him he is a really nice man and very sincere. When Im downtown if I see Willie I always say hi. He is one of the few things in Peoria that I enjoy. I have shared my booze with him on St. Patricks day and snuck him into concerts when I was a teenager. We love your website. Although we haven't lived in Peoria for ten years, we were just discussing Willie with our Illinois relatives this past Christmas. I knew Willie when he was in the Armed Services. Very handsome and intelligent and we had a close relationship. He loved my kids, Randy and Billy. And when Randy died, he was very saddened. Something happened to him when he was over-seas many years ago. Wish I knew what it was so I could help him fight his demons. I still care about him. HE IS STILL MY FRIEND! Since I was a small child I was told about the "devil" that walked the streets of Peoria. As I grew up and started to frequent downtown I saw the "devil". Willie was always funny. The man always made me laugh. He was not harmful as my family had made him to sound. I think this petition idea is GREAT. He honestly has been around for a long time and, he has added much flavor to our downtown area. God bless that man he is truely great.

I stay at the safety net, where technically willie is barred from, and here 2 sundays ago we are out back with Willie. We give him one of our beers left over from the night before. We tell Willie not to drink on camera so he cracks it open on camera. The police are at the women's shelter and Willie shouts, "I'm over here, goddammit" We ask the people that run the show why the hell thewy would call the cops on willie when they had seen him smoking a cigarette in the women's bathroom. He told them he was going back to prison that day. They tell us he went across the street to the pay phone and called them on himself. The police come up to where Willie is and tell him to take his hands out of his pocket. Keep in mind that he was in full whiteface with blue cheeks and eyebrows. He had called in a bomb threat. He pronounced it "bum threat" but we all knew what he meant. The police told him they only had 20 beds and they were all full so he couldn't go back to prison that day. They uncuff him and he goes back to the camera to finish his beer giving us the Willie smile. A lot can happen at 7 in the morning. Who else can call in a bomb threat and go finish their open beer? He then told us he was going to the bank.
